Is Crowdsourcing a Fad or a Foundational Element?
Crowd Funding - Business Exchange11 May 2012 | 8:11 amMuch has been written about ‘crowdsourcing’ and the ‘wisdom of the crowd’ over the past several years, including “Crowdsourcing” by Jeff Howe – a contributing editor at Wired magazine, and “Wisdom of the Crowd” by James Surowiecki – a staff writer at The New Yorker. -

Home - Daily Crowdsource15 May 2012 | 10:00 amWe all wonder, from time to time, how caring our friends & Neighbors really are, and we wonder what would happen to us in a time of need if all we had to rely upon was their goodwill. What would they do? What would they offer? Would they turn away if we asked for help? Well, I think that through crowdfunding, we have seen a glimpse at the reality behind a happy answer to these questions. Take a look for yourself in the video below. -
Featured Creator: Martin Usborne of Dogs In Cars
Kickstarter Blog14 May 2012 | 7:57 pmMartin Usborne is a self-professed "massive dog lover," but his work — a series of portraits depicting dogs left behind in cars — is about much more than that. "I remember being left in the car as a kid," he explains in his project video. "And although that was never for very long, there was that huge fear that noone would ever come back. And that fear of being alone and without a voice stayed with me throughout much of my childhood... This image of a dog looking out a car window seems to capture that feeling precisely." Paging through the images, one is struck by their aesthetic…

Calling passion into question
23 Apr 2012 | 9:30 am(image by Michael Gorzka) While reading through my Twitter timeline recently, I saw one tweet that really caught my attention. It was a response to a Quora question which asked something along the lines of, “Do entrepreneurs just say they’re passionate about their venture in order to get money?”. Well I digress, it was a bit harsher than that. It was more like, “Is ‘i’m so passionate for this idea’ a BS story from founders?” The individual expanded on this in a way which made their question actually seem reasonable. They explained by asking how…

Kickstarter API Bug
13 May 2012 | 5:14 pmOn Friday one of our engineers uncovered a bug involving Kickstarter's private API, which is used to display projects on the Kickstarter homepage. This bug allowed some data from unlaunched projects to be made accessible via the API. It was immediately fixed upon discovering the error. No account or financial data of any kind was made accessible. For those who are unfamiliar, an API is a software interface that allows software to communicate with one another. It's not like a webpage that an internet user could point their browser to. It is a feed of data meant to be shared between… -
This Week in Kickstarter
11 May 2012 | 11:17 amThis week in Kickstarter, Pebble met Twine. That's right, the two famous Kickstarter projects that link devices together got hitched this week, as evidenced by this video they posted, which demonstrates how Pebble and Twine interact. Synergy, people, synergy! While the Twine and Pebble were busy making connections, we got to meet Safwat from the classic Oh Expletive! project. Safwat was nice enough to give us these Zombie and Unicorn tattoos, which Cooper and Nicole instantly emblazened on their necks. Nothing says awesome like Unicorn and Zombie neck tats. Backers, be on the lookout, as… -
Featured Creator: Renny Braga of Oki Doki Food Truck
10 May 2012 | 11:23 amRenny Braga grew up on the southernmost Japanese island of Okinawa, born to a Portuguese father and a Chinese mother. (Phew, if there was ever a recipe for a delicious culinary heritage, that just might be it.) As a kid, he helped his grandmother prepare nightly dinner for their family — a memory fondly recollected in his project description for its profound influence on his future food aspirations: "I would always watch intently and ask questions about her recipes. Whenever I cook those dishes now, I try to reproduce the same wonderful flavors that my grandmother created. I love to cook,… -

Mac or PC? Learn how one borrower made the call with Prosper.com
2 May 2012 | 2:04 pmOne of the great things about a Prosper Loan is that you can use it in a variety of ways.*Jay Julian is a great example of this. He used his first loan to upgrade his PC and purchase an iPad - and then he came back for a second loan to complete the switch to Mac. We followed up with him last week to learn more about his experience, and here are some of his thoughts: 1. You control the process. Jay tells us, “I liked the idea of being able to conduct the entire transaction, from application to funding, on my schedule, not the bank’s. It is a flawless process.” 2. Applying is… -

A New Odyssey for Emily Mure
15 May 2012 | 10:04 amThis will be the second album that I make as a singer/songwriter/guitarist. I want to call it “Odyssey” after a song I wrote about a 1997 Honda Odyssey that unfortunately we had to “put down” this past winter. The Odyssey took me and my friends on a great number of adventures, many of which have inspired songs that will be on this next album. Since so many songs of mine are about experiences with traveling, love, and self-reflection, it seems fitting to call the album “Odyssey” in dedication to those self defining journeys and the vehicles that take us… -
Crowdfunding Tweets Into Space
14 May 2012 | 11:18 amWe were in Berlin for a show - as finalists for Transmediale - when we started talking about Tweets in Space. There was whiskey and beer involved, and a fair amount of excited jumping around. Our first collaboration, Wikipedia Art, was an intervention on the world's most popular encyclopedia. An "artwork that anyone can edit," the piece was more successful as more folks participated, and these two things fed into and amplified one another. We invited the public to play with us and each other, and also revealed a few things about power and knowledge in the age of the Internet. That's the work… -

New Improv Festival Takes Root in NYC
10 May 2012 | 10:22 amHeather: Liz & I have always lamented how improvisational theater got the short stick, at the expense of improvisational comedy. While those shows are fun to watch, we especially love improv that is character based, that seeks to tell a story, that takes audience members on a journey, through laughs AND tears, that is not focused on getting the laugh at the expense of truth. Rather, it's the truthfulness that happens with improvisational theatre that excites us... and almost always gets the laughs, and better laughs, in the end. Plus, no one was celebrating improvisational FILM, and,… -
The Amoralists Crowdfund New Theatre
9 May 2012 | 10:50 amThe Amoralists is a theatre company that explores complex characters of moral ambiguity. We’re interested in “good guys” who are sometimes bad and “bad guys” who are sometimes good. Now that we know each other... The Bad and the Better is a classic detective story that sets modern issues against the stylistic backdrop of a classic film noir. The play tells the story of the Lang Brothers, two NYC police detectives, who find themselves with too much information in a conspiratorial plot to get a corrupt politician elected Governor of New York. The more…

Introducing the Era of the Social Salesperson

We posed the following questions to Jordan Bowerman of SociallyShared.com about the platform for tapping the power of "social sales" to promote products. When were you founded and how did it all began? ...in January 2012 by a 23-year-old entrepreneur who got his start learning from a business incubator called GLIDE -- also where the SociallyShared offices are now located. How does SociallyShared work? Who are the players? SociallyShared… -
Crowdsourcing Roundup - A Tasty Venture and Platform News
14 May 2012 | 4:21 pmIt's shaping up to be a big week for the crowd -- there's at least two big Crowdfunding gatherings happening here in the U.S., the Senate will hear about the benefits of Open Innovation in HIV / AIDS treatment and we've got a fresh podcast with Clickworker up (and just recorded another one today). But before we get too far ahead, let's take a moment to round up a few of the crowdsourcing headlines we might have missed over the last 7 days or so: The Geography of Delicious Food brand GLORIOUS! has launched the world’s first fully interactive, user-generated flavor map. 14 May 2012 | 3:45 pmOn Tuesday, a U.S. Senate Subcommittee will hold a hearing on a bill from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders that would use an Open Innovation prize model to push forward the development of more effective and affordable drugs to treat HIV/AIDS. The bill S. 1138 would "eliminate legal barriers to generic competition for HIV/AIDS drugs and reward innovation directly, through a $3 billion a year prize fund," according to a statement from the Senator's office. In addition to serving as an incentive for new innovation, Sanders' office also says the bill would also encouraging opening up research into…

The two new topics that will be discussed this Wednesday (6pm EST) are: - Block Cushion Furniture - Auto-Cooling Pitcher If you’re new to brainstorms, allow us to explain. Every week, QDS blows a few product ideas wide open to kick off the design process. You can take part in that. Here’s how: 1. Topics are posted above. Hold that Door!…Introducting: Anchor
15 May 2012 | 11:00 amThis isn’t your typical door stopper. Anchor can be securely tethered to your door, keeping it out of the way when you don’t need it and right where it should be when you do. It uses no hardware, so no damage is done to your door and removal is easy. Its cleverly designed profile allows one end to be clipped to the bottom edge of the door, while a flexible neck enables the door stopper itself to be easily engaged or disengaged by foot. The friction fit clip makes it a perfect fit for typical residential and commercial door sizes. Anchor inventor Gyro wanted a more efficient door stopper… -
Invention Picks of the Week!
14 May 2012 | 11:00 amJohn Rakowski is a Certified Nursing Assistant from Rensselaer, NY. He currently takes care of his mother by helping her with her day-to-day activities. John noticed that the grabber his mother uses is very inefficient and in John’s mind it should be made a lot better. John believes that with the addition of LED lights, magnets, a shoe horn, and by making it extendable, the grabber will improve the self-efficiency of elderly people. He also believes that the market is not only for the elderly but for anyone that uses a grabber. The Quirky staff felt strongly about re-designing the… -
Robert Jarvik and the Birth of the Artificial Heart
11 May 2012 | 1:00 pmThe quest to design an artificial human heart has been going on for the better part of a century. The first rudimentary heart pump was invented in 1949 by researchers at the Yale School of Medicine, and was constructed from an Erector set and convenience store trinkets (the prototype successfully bypassed a dog’s heart for over an hour, if you can believe it). From that starting point, a number of partial and complete artificial hearts were developed, including one unit designed by Domingo Liotta that kept a patient alive for 64 hours, but no model came close to serving as a long-term… -

"Taste the Waste" Dokumentarfilmer starten das Projekt "Foodsharing"

Why we’re crowdfunding to crowdfund
3 May 2012 | 9:57 amToday we posted a project on IndieGoGo to help us do some down and dirty tech work on our platform to improve the way it works as a white label crowdfunding platform for clients – but also to improve the way our now year old Fundchange works. The year has taught us that charities and non-profits need lots of help getting the crowd involved in the work they do by funding projects or doable asks. Support our work here: http://www.indiegogo.com/fundchange If you would like to help us improve our platform to be able to help charities and non-profits in Canada but around the world through… -
Crowdsourcing and Crisis Mapping
30 Mar 2012 | 6:50 amCrowdsourcing has been a popular crisis mapping tool. Used to map a wide range of issues, crowdsourcing makes it easier for a large group of people from all over a region, city, country, etc., to document where problems are occurring and when. This information is used to help respond to problems, provide aid to regions that need it and keep the public up-to-date on issues as they progress. At the International Conference of Crisis Mappers in November, Gregory Asmolov spoke about using crisis mapping and crowdsourcing in Russia, and how they are tools of mutual aid.
